It can be better than this
It's no picnic. Oh, wait.
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Dr Seuss, The Lorax

Previously at the Volcano Base I'd been saying that nothing is future proof. Since then, I won't lie, it's been tough. But I'm not alone.

Everything seems difficult, doesn't it

When I was a kid it seemed that, in general, growing up involved progress. I saw the adults leave University, get jobs, get better at those jobs, earn more money, and their standard of living increased until they comfortably retired. Mostly.

I thought it would be like that for me too. Things getting a little bit better every year, despite the occasional setback.

I can't put my finger on what happened, but for almost every adult I know, the last 10 years has been a story of decline. Of struggle. Of just about getting by. Of carrying a heavier and heavier burden. Of existential disappointment with their lives and the state of the world. We're sick of corrupt politicians and billionaires, of forever wars, of rolling redundancies, of a planet on the brink, but there doesn't seem to be anything we can do about it.

What does this teach us about business?

I'm kidding, obviously. This isn't LinkedIn.

Does it teach us anything about business, though? Nope. Can't say that it does.

But we need our businesses to survive, thrive even, or we risk being swallowed up and excreted by a system that doesn't care about us.

So, here's my contribution to helping businesses thrive, now that we have some new technologies upsetting the applecart. If nothing else, at least we can stop working as hard as we do.

Stop working so hard

That feels pretty cheesy, doesn't it, dropping that there. But when it comes to business, helping them adapt to new technologies is what I've always done. And when it comes to AI, no business I've spoken to knows what to do. I can help with that, and get them set up. So, you know, if you hear of anyone...

Oh, almost forgot. While putting this 90 day programme together, I created an AI agent system that provides high level advice about applying AI and automation in your business.

Honestly, I wasn't busy last week (despite an AI project for a public sector body) so I probably put a bit too much time into it. It's an AI Diagnostic tool. You tell it a bit about your situation and it emails you some custom advice. Give it a shot if you like.

Society of Hopeful Technologists

Survey: Society for Hopeful Technologists — Careful Industries
Are you a UK-based technologist interested in joining a body that acts in solidarity against the excesses of extractive platform capitalism? Complete this survey to help shape the Society for Hopeful Technologists.

Rachel Coldicutt OBE has launched a survey (ends in a week) to contribute to the creation of a body that acts in solidarity against the excesses of extractive platform capitalism. If you'd like to contribute to the creation of better technologies and a more just, equitable society, you could complete the survey, if you like.

AlphaEvolve

AlphaEvolve: A Gemini-powered coding agent for designing advanced algorithms
New AI agent evolves algorithms for math and practical applications in computing by combining the creativity of large language models with automated evaluators

AlphaEvolve can create and optimise algorithms much faster than humans, which can lead to significant improvements in how computers work, making them more efficient and powerful. This could benefit many areas, including mathematics, data processing, and medicine, by solving complex problems more effectively and quickly.
