The Core #10: Best practice is a myth

I'm starting to run out of core principles, so the frequency of this limited series might slow down a bit.
When people talk about "best practice", I'm immediately on guard. It's not because the concept of best practice is a bad one, it's that "best" can get you in a lot of trouble, especially if it's someone else's definition of "best".
Working with new systems means there is no best practice yet. There can be a set of good practices to select from, but no clear winner.
Work with long-established systems may have generated some practices that were, at the time, the best ones. But saying "this is the best way" means you're not exploring newer alternatives that may be better.
Circumstances change. Best adapts. Good is enough.
